The further you travel from your own land, the more vulnerable you become, making every expansion a balance between ambition and survival.

The Basic Goal: Take More Land
You begin with a small area of territory. Your character can leave that area and create a trail through unclaimed space or territory controlled by other players. When you successfully return to your own territory, the enclosed area becomes yours.
This creates a simple gameplay cycle:
Leave your territory → create a trail → return safely → capture the enclosed space.
The challenge is deciding how far you should travel. A larger loop can produce a much bigger reward, but it also leaves your trail exposed for longer.
Your Trail Is Your Weakness
The most important rule in Paper.io is that your exposed trail is vulnerable.
While you're outside your territory, another player can eliminate you by touching your trail before you complete your loop. You can also be eliminated by touching your own trail. Inside your territory, you're much safer, but expanding requires you to take that risk.
This means territory isn't just something to collect. It also acts as your defensive base.
How to Capture Territory
Start by making relatively small expansions close to your existing area. Once you return to your territory, everything inside the completed path is captured.
As your territory becomes larger, you have more room to maneuver and more options for future expansions. You can also move toward an opponent's exposed trail and attempt to cut them off before they make it back to safety.
Paper.io therefore has two connected objectives: expand your own area and create opportunities against rivals.
Controls
The controls are intentionally simple:
Mouse: Move your character by dragging or directing the pointer.
WASD / Arrow Keys: Control movement in supported browser versions.
Touchscreen: Swipe to move on mobile devices.

Can You Take the Entire Map?
