Game Overview

Apple Worm looks simple at first: guide a hungry worm through a small puzzle level, eat an apple, and find the exit. But the worm's growing body is both the key to solving each stage and the reason things can quickly go wrong. Every movement needs to be considered because getting longer can help you cross a gap while also making it easier to trap yourself.

The Apple Is Part of the Solution

The goal in each level is to reach the portal, but the route is rarely obvious. Apples are placed around the stage to make the worm longer, allowing it to reach platforms or areas that were previously inaccessible. The catch is that you need to decide when and where to grow.

A longer worm has more reach, but it also takes up more space. Eating an apple too early can therefore turn a promising solution into a dead end. This makes Apple Worm more about planning than speed.

Think About the Whole Body

One of the game's most interesting mechanics is that you cannot focus only on the worm's head. Your entire body affects where you can move next. Tight corners, walls, gaps, and platforms can all become obstacles if you approach them from the wrong direction.

Before making a move, consider where the tail will end up. Sometimes the correct solution involves taking a seemingly unnecessary detour so the worm reaches the right position for its next move.

Short Levels, Increasing Challenges

The original browser version features compact puzzle stages that gradually become more demanding. Early levels introduce the basic relationship between movement, apples, and the exit, while later puzzles require more careful spatial reasoning. Coolmath Games lists 30 levels in its browser version.

If a move leaves your worm trapped or sends it off the level, restarting is part of the learning process. You can quickly reset the stage and test another route rather than spending time trying to recover an impossible position.

Controls

  • WASD: Move the worm

  • Arrow Keys: Move the worm

  • R: Restart the current level

The game is designed around simple movement controls, leaving most of the challenge to your planning and observation.

How to Approach a Difficult Level

  • Look before moving. Take a moment to identify the apple, portal, gaps, and potential dead ends.
  • Don't rush for the apple. Growing longer is useful only when you have a plan for using the extra length.
  • Think backward from the portal. Consider what position the worm needs to reach the exit, then work out how to get there.
  • Watch the tail. A path that looks open for the head may become impossible once the rest of the worm follows.
  • Restart without hesitation. Failed attempts can reveal which part of your plan needs changing.
