Game Overview
In Hexanaut.io, every move can turn a small patch of land into a growing territory—or leave you exposed to an opponent. This real-time multiplayer game combines snake-style movement with a hexagonal map. Players venture beyond their safe zone, draw a trail, and loop back to claim the tiles inside. The challenge is to expand without giving rivals an easy chance to cut your line.

Claim Land Without Getting Caught
You begin with a small area that acts as your safe territory. Move beyond its border and your character leaves a trail behind. When you reconnect with your land, the enclosed hexagons become yours. Capturing territory also helps you level up and gain a speed bonus.
The danger comes from the exposed trail. If an opponent crosses it before you return, you’re eliminated. You can use the same tactic against other players when they leave their own territory. That makes each expansion a calculated risk: a large loop may capture more tiles, but it also gives rivals a longer line to attack.
Totems Change the Map
Special Totems are scattered across the arena and provide useful bonuses when captured. A Speed Totem improves movement, while a Spreading Totem automatically claims nearby hexagons. The Spy Dish offers extra information on the minimap, the Teleport Gate helps you travel across your own territory, and the Slowing Totem creates an area that hinders opponents.
These structures can influence your route and your priorities. Instead of always aiming for the largest possible land grab, consider whether securing a nearby Totem could give you a lasting tactical advantage.
The King Challenge
The main victory condition is tied to map control. Reach 20% of the arena to become King, then keep your territory above that threshold for three minutes to win. Becoming King also reveals other players’ positions on your minimap—but your own position is revealed to them, too.
That visibility changes the pace of the match. Opponents know who is leading and can focus their attention on challenging your territory. At this stage, defending your borders and avoiding risky excursions may matter more than expanding quickly. Eliminating every opponent is another possible route to victory.
Choose a Mode and Play Your Way
Hexanaut.io offers several ways to compete. Free For All is a solo contest, while Duo lets partners share territory and bonuses. PRO modes add airdrops and one-use items, bringing extra options into the fight. A rotating Weekly mode also changes its rules, giving regular players a different challenge over time.

Beginner Strategies
Start with manageable loops. Shorter routes reduce the time your trail is exposed.
Keep an eye on nearby players. An opponent close to your border may be waiting for you to venture out.
Capture Totems thoughtfully. Choose bonuses that support your immediate position and overall plan.
Avoid overextending. Territory is useful only if you can survive long enough to keep it.
Prepare for the King phase. Reaching 20% is only the start; plan how you’ll protect your lead for the countdown.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you capture hexagons in Hexanaut.io?
Move outside your territory to draw a trail, then return to your own land to close a loop. The hexagons enclosed by the trail are added to your territory.
What happens if another player cuts your trail?
You are eliminated if an opponent crosses your exposed tail before you reconnect with your territory. Your own land is safe, but the line you draw outside it is vulnerable.
How do you win a match?
The standard King objective is to control 20% of the map and hold above that threshold for three minutes. Eliminating all opponents can also provide a win condition once a King is active.
Can you play with a friend?
Yes. Duo mode allows players to team up, share territory, and benefit from team play. The game also supports party links for inviting friends.
